Brain Based Learning

Some Core Principles of Brain Based Learning are:

  • The brain is a parallel processor. It can therefore perform several tasks at once. For example when we are presented with a beautiful meal we can see, smell, and taste it simultaneously.
  • Learning engages the whole physiology
  • We have an innate need to search for meaning which comes through patterning. Emotions are crucial to patterning.
  • The brain can process wholes and part simultaneously

Learning is a Complex Process

Learning involves both focused attention and peripheral perception. It is both a conscious and unconscious process and we have spatial memory ad rote memory. That is why learning is best understood when the facts we are trying to grasp are embedded in natural, spatial memory.

It is important we are challenged in the learning process but that learners do not feel threatened, or inhibited by fear.

The best learning scenarios are relevant and real to the learners. The most critical feedback is real feedback from peers rather than authority figures.

The more engaging the learning and the more trainees are challenged to actively process information during the learning process the greater the chance of successful training outcomes.
